Africa=libraries and big hair...at least that's what Toto's video told me...

I have been a fan of the song "Africa" by Toto for quite some time now, probably since middle school. I am not quite sure what the attraction is but I'm thinking it's the fact that I have never known the lyrics and not once dared to look them up. Songs are more fun that way.

But nothing, my friends, will top the epicness of what I have just discovered.

    The video for Africa.

I believe that if you click the title of this blog you will be directed to the video...if not I am fully confident of your skills to type it into google on your own.

My favorite part of the video is definitely 3 minutes and 23 seconds...what an unexpected surprise!

    Nothing trumps the 80's.

Owl City

So I thought I was in love with Blake from TOMS shoes but that kind of went down hill when I found out he was dating Maggie-Grace (LOST and Taken) after extensive internet creeping. Did I mention they live in a boat off the coast of California? Hey, I never said I was proud of my skills.
Anyways...I have found my NEW love thanks to the musical tastes of the one and only Kristen Marks.
Owl City.

Let me introduce you to Adam Young. He records much of his music on his own which is totally boss. To give you some background to why I am in love, let me list a few of his interests (they are on the owl city myspace okay???): God, Optimism, Photography, Air Travel, Foreign Accents, Swimming Pools, Friends, Romance, and Sigur Ros.
**swoon**
Did I mention he is a photographer? Here is one of his pictures...
Okay, I'll stop with all of this nonsense now.
But you should really check out his music.
It's very upbeat and fun to dance to while driving :)
If I opened up my own Indie Bar, Owl City would definitely be at the top of the playlist.

So am I the exception or the rule?

A girl will never forget the first time she watches He's Just Not That Into You. For me, it was this past Valentine's Day with my roommates. Bad life decision. We left the movie theater with a sense of defeat; half the actors in the movie ended with a not-so-happy ending which we immediately related to our non-existent dating lives. I mean really, who wants to leave a movie they have paid for with the message of "Hey, you might be single...FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE"???
Can you blame us? Girls are programmed from birth to
believe in the so-called "Prince Charmings" that are supposed to sweep us off our feet, when in reality they are usually just hormonal teenage boys with half a developed frontal lobe.
Anyways, the movie grew on me. I appreciated the fact that it was not trying to cram down my throat ridiculous promises that would eventually result in a let down. The bluntness of Alex (Justin Long...i wouldn't fight it) was hilarious when juxtaposed to the desperate mind of Gigi(Ginnifer Goodwin), the girl who if we are all honest with ourselves can relate to in some extent. I'm not going to lie, she kind of drives me crazy at the beginning of the movie with how psycho she is but who isn't guilty of misreading mixed signals from a guy?
So, Alex comes up with this concept to help a sister out: the exception and the rule. Basically, this idea is...
1) The stories you have always heard about love and happily ever afters are, in reality, happening slim to none.
2)The reality is most guys are really not that into you and are just seeking some form of instant of gratification...and I think we all know what that is.
Ouch!
But good news. Through Alex's mental breakdown leading him to Gigi, marriages broken up by tramps and marriages finally starting after 7 years, what this movie boils down to is this; there is no rule book. No one really knows what the heck is going on in the dating realm. Not all guys are out to get in your pants. I mean look at Kevin Connolly's character...he thinks he can "settle dow
n" and take along Scarlett Johansson, the town strumpet, as his June Clever yet ends up with Drew Barrymore (who is actually an executive producer for this film. Thank goodness she has grown out of Josie Grossie characters and come into her own). Oh, and not all women are psychotic, obsessive wife-wannabes. This is made apparent in Scarlett's character who is, like I said, a homewrecker that doesn't give a flip about the marriage she is destroying till the door of the closet she is hiding in smacks her in the face. In the words of Mama Eckerle, "This is not funny! She is going straight to Hell!"
Basically, you should: rent it, watch it with some girlfriends and realize that there are no guidelines that need to be followed in order to find love. It will happen if it's supposed to happen. And if it doesn't, well, don't beat yourself up about it. Focus on you and continue to build your life. Don't just use the people you date, but also don't take dating, or yourself, too seriously.
