My mom has recently been buying Silk soy milk. I decided to give it a try and I actually like it, which is surprising because I basically drink a glass of dairy milk with every single meal. I did some research because I've heard a lot of random two cents from people about the drawbacks of both soy and diary. Here's what I found...
Soy protein in Silk is considered a “complete protein” in that it contains the correct amino acids for optimum health and is low in saturated fat and 100% cholesterol free, unlike animal milk. Silk also contains omega-‘s and antioxidants. Silk purchases one REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) per kilowatt hour of electricity used. The purchase of the REC helps to improve renewable energy sources, like windmills, thus aiding in the shift toward a greener environment. It is generally accepted as a substitue for animal milk. Soy milk has been said to negatively effect male fertility, so if I get married I’ll be buying Soy for myself and dairy milk for the hubby.

My other research has shown that dairy milk is fine, too. Some argue that milk is not intended to be consumed post-infancy but I can’t help but notice the types of diseases and cancers that milk is proven to prevent!
I think, based on my minimal investigating, I will alternate between Soy and dairy milk. I will only buy Publix milk though because they do not use the growth hormone and it lasts longer than organic milk…and is cheaper.
Mooooo.
Ok, maybe it's my lactose intolerance, but... I don't trust dairy milk.I feel like it's not that great for you, and I think that it is extremely suspect that humans are the only beings that consume milk past infancy.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, studies show that most adults become lactose intolerant because their bodies are no longer designed to digest milk. It's actually pretty rare for a child to be born lactose intolerant, it's usually develops in adults. (i'm special, what can i say?)
So i love silk. I used to drink Lactaid, but Silk is I think better for you, and I like the sweeter taste.
So I fully support the soy milk movement. There is also West Soy, which doesn't have to be refridgerated until you open it, so you can stock up on it until you need it, so it doesn't go bad as quickly.
just fyi girl!
thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeletethat actually makes a lot of sense-i mean i know two friends who didn't find out until this past year they are lactose intolerant! crazy.
i think the reason the cons of milk are so hush hush is because the man (in this instance the milk industry) just wants some money as usual. go figure.
